Factor Endowments, Democracy, and Trade Policy Divergence

چکیده
We develop a stochastic model of electoral competition in order to study the economic and political determinants of trade policy. We model a small open economy with two tradable goods, each of which is produced using a sectorspecific factor (e.g., land and capital) and another factor that is mobile between these tradable sectors (labor); one nontradable good, which is also produced using a specific factor (skilled labor), and an elected government with the mandate to tax trade flows. The tax revenue is used to provide local public goods that increase the economic agents’ utility. We use this general equilibrium model to explicitly derive the ideal policies of the different socioeconomic Sebastian Galiani, Department of Economics, Washington University in St. Louis, Campus Box 1208, One Brookings Drive, St. Louis, MO 63130-4899, USA ([email protected]). An empirical tradition in international trade seeks to establish whether the predictions of factor abundance theory match with the data. The relation between factor endowments and trade in goods (commodity version of Hecksher-Ohlin) provide mildly encouraging empirical results. But in the analysis of factor service trade and factor endowments (factor content version of HO), the results show tha...
متن کاملDo Factor Endowments Matter for North-North Trade?
The central paradigm of world trade patterns divides this into two elements. Trade between North and South is viewed as determined by traditional comparative advantage, largely determined by differences in endowment patterns. Trade within the North is viewed as determined by specialization due to economies of scale and product differentiation. In this paper, we will argue that this division is ...
متن کاملA Re-examination of the Relation between Democracy and International Trade: The Case of Africa
Scholars and policy makers believe that democracy will bring prosperity through integration into the global economy via increased international trade. This study tests two theories as to why democracies might trade more. First, political freedom may be correlated with economic freedom, thus prompting higher levels of economic activity, thereby driving states to trade more. Second, democracy imp...
متن کاملThe dynamic e ects of trade liberalization and environmental policy harmonization
We study a general equilibrium model in which trade is driven by institutional di erences (di erences in environmental distortions) and di ering factor endowments (di erences in production-related environmental stocks). The endogenous evolution of environmental stocks depends on the trade regime and on the extent of environmental distortions in the two countries. The economy can have multiple s...

This paper analyses the impact of sanctions against Iran in addition to other country-specific determinants on intra-industry trade between Iran and Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) countries over the period 1997-2013. By disentangling total intra-industry trade (IIT) into horizontal and vertical IIT and after investigating bilateral trade pattern between Iran and SCO countries, determin...
